Indian Head Massage

Indian head massage does not only focus on the head and scalp as its name suggests but also works on the neck, shoulders, upper back and arms and face, which are the main areas in the body where stress and tension are often felt. The different Indian head massage movements and techniques help to relax the muscles, ease away stiffness, stimulate blood circulation and eliminate toxins from the body. Indian head massage helps release the stress that has accumulated in the tissues, muscles and joints of the head, face, neck and shoulders.

The scalp, neck, face, shoulders, upper back and arms are indulgently massaged to help ease tension, promote relaxation and provide an enhanced sense of wellbeing.

This treatment may particularly help relieve headaches, migraines, eyestrain, sinus issues, neck and shoulder stiffness and general fatigue.

Who is treatment particularly beneficial for?

It is especially helpful for office workers, people who spend a great deal of time in front of computer screens and people who are predominately desk bound in their jobs or studying a great deal. Indian head massage is beneficial for anyone who tends to carry tension in their shoulders and neck and unnecessary holding in the jaw, face and scalp.

What should I expect from the treatment?

The treatment is traditionally comfortably seated though if you prefer you may lie down and rest on the couch.

The treatment usually starts at the upper back, as I begin to soothe and apply pressure to points that dissolve knots and relax the muscles. I may then move to the shoulders and upper arms to release other common areas of tension and to the neck and head to release headache causing blockages and to encourage better circulation of the cerebral fluid. The massage then progresses to the scalp, relaxing the entire head, encouraging circulation and stimulating hair growth.

Lastly, I move to your face and give a gentle face massage that may relieve symptoms of sinusitis and headaches and encourages good circulation and a glowing complexion. I may then offer some energy balancing work to end the treatment on a blissfully calming and indulgent note.

Of course, the above is a general guide to how the treatment may progress. Your experience is tailored very much to where you may most benefit and we discuss this during our consultation. It really is your time and experience to gain maximise benefit from and I am very happy to adapt.

Calming, balancing and reviving

Reiki may be incorporated into your treatment if you desire, as is traditionally practiced in Indian head massage where the three higher chakras or energy centres of the body, (the crown of the head, the brow and the throat) are nurtured to help bring about greater balance within.

Marma points, similar to those used in acupressure that help stimulate life force, may be incorporated alongside some chakra energy balancing.

What are the benefits?

Indian head massage helps increase joint mobility and flexibility in the neck and shoulders, improves blood circulation and lymphatic flow, frees knots of muscular tension, relaxes connective tissue, and aids in the elimination of accumulated toxins and waste products. It is particularly good for reducing the effects of stress and tension.

It can provide relief from aches and pains, stress symptoms, insomnia, promote hair growth, soothe, comfort and rebalance your energy flow which gives you a deep sense of peace, calm and tranquillity. The treatment also enhances feeling energised, revitalised and being better able to concentrate.

History of Indian Champissage (Head Massage)

Indian head massage or Champissage is based on the Ayurvedic system of healing (often likened to the sister science of yoga) which has been practiced in India for over a thousand years. Traditionally the practice provides Indian families with daily nurture, soothing touch and connection, relaxation and healing. It also plays a part in rituals such as weddings and births, not to mention everyday events like a trip to the barber, (indeed, you will find that aspects of Indian head massage has now found its way into Western barbers and hairdressers). There are many techniques that encourage good scalp health as well as healthy hair growth.
